Video of the Day: Drone Footage of Surfing Pipeline in Oahu

First of all, this is mesmerizing video for any who relate to surfing and the rhythm of nature. Especially impressive: The spurt of water vapor at the end of the barrels as the waves close out.

OK, now the work stuff:  Although local, state and federal governmental officials are still determining when-where-how drones will be used for commercial purposes, some individual enthusiasts are innovating techniques to use aerial video to document the well-known in never-before-seen ways, as you’ll see in this bitchen video recorded on the North Shore of Oahu.

Video of the Day: Kayaker’s Encounter with Humpback Whale

Especially with GoPro video cameras, there are enormous ways to document adventures and experiences, then share them with the world — as was the case with this humpback whale which surfaced next to Berthold Hinrichs’ kayak in water outside Senja in northern Norway.

All who’ve felt wonder at whale encounters will enjoy this clip which hit the TV news broadcasts on January 15, 2014.

(The best practice Mr. Hinrichs used was the requirement that any TV broadcasters pay a licensing fee, creating a revenue opportunity following a unique encounter with nature. Hincrichs also added advertising banners on the lower third of his copyrighted material).

Video of The Day: Pearl Jam Fan’s Video Goes Viral

Remarkable, and uncontrollable, forces lead to an online video going viral.  One of the key ingredients is a springboard in the form of a high-profile promoter, online bulletin board — or in the case of the video below — a rabid fan base.  Seek these out to spike views of your online marketing videos!

The day this video went viral, I was chatting on Facebook with a fellow long-time Pearl Jam fan just hours after she posted a video she recorded at the band’s October 27, 2013 concert in Baltimore.  Minute by minute, the YouTube view count rolled from the hundreds into the thousands, eventually topping out at more than 20,000 views.  Turns out a fellow fan posted the link on the band’s message board, tipping off others to the video.

8th Bridge Social Commerce IQ Report

The 2013 8th Bridge Social Commerce IQ Report is an must-read for online marketing professionals who target either consumers or businesses on social platforms.

The report digs deep, with hard-t0-dispute quantitative analysis, of the trends of major retailers in regards to their use of social media, including online video, for product discovery.

Among the findings of 8th Bridge’s analysis of more than 800-retailers are these tibbits (which small to medium sized businesses should mimic):

  • More integrate the PinIt button than the Facebook “Like” into their webpages.
  • The average retailer has more than 23,000 followers on Youtube who watched an average of 10.6M videos.
  • Facebook still leads in “upstream traffic” that resulted in visitor become a follower, fan  and/or subscriber.
  • 2nd leading origin of upstream traffic: Youtube!
  • 73% incorporate ratings and reviews into their websites.
