Video of The Day: Ice Circle or Aliens UFO

The video clip below demonstrates the random, unpredictable, and zany realities of YouTube. A friend posted the clip in 2009 after recording video of an ice circle, in which an almost perfect circle is cut by water flow. To date, it has received more than 36,000 views, as has a companion clip. The video was also sold for a small licensing fee to a TV producer preparing a program on natural phenomenons.

 

 

No doubt, the keywords “Aliens” and “UFO” increased discovery and viewing, as the clip was linked to other videos related to these topics. Therein, lies the best practice for marketers who use online video. Identify and use common terms and tags in your titles and metadata. If so, your viewers will more easily discover the videos you’ve published, and in the process, self-guide their discovery of your people, products and services.

Video of the Day: Kayaker’s Encounter with Humpback Whale

Especially with GoPro video cameras, there are enormous ways to document adventures and experiences, then share them with the world — as was the case with this humpback whale which surfaced next to Berthold Hinrichs’ kayak in water outside Senja in northern Norway.

All who’ve felt wonder at whale encounters will enjoy this clip which hit the TV news broadcasts on January 15, 2014.

(The best practice Mr. Hinrichs used was the requirement that any TV broadcasters pay a licensing fee, creating a revenue opportunity following a unique encounter with nature. Hincrichs also added advertising banners on the lower third of his copyrighted material).

8th Bridge Social Commerce IQ Report

The 2013 8th Bridge Social Commerce IQ Report is an must-read for online marketing professionals who target either consumers or businesses on social platforms.

The report digs deep, with hard-t0-dispute quantitative analysis, of the trends of major retailers in regards to their use of social media, including online video, for product discovery.

Among the findings of 8th Bridge’s analysis of more than 800-retailers are these tibbits (which small to medium sized businesses should mimic):

  • More integrate the PinIt button than the Facebook “Like” into their webpages.
  • The average retailer has more than 23,000 followers on Youtube who watched an average of 10.6M videos.
  • Facebook still leads in “upstream traffic” that resulted in visitor become a follower, fan  and/or subscriber.
  • 2nd leading origin of upstream traffic: Youtube!
  • 73% incorporate ratings and reviews into their websites.

2012 was a break-out year for online video—and online video marketing — as seen in the infographic below the fold (produced by the folks at SundaySky).

Among the jaw-dropping headlines:

  • 56% of all consumer Web traffic is now video
  • 182 million viewers watched 457 million content videos and 105.4 billion video ads
  • Video ad spend was $2.9 billion (26% over 2011) and made up 23% of year’s total ad spend
